NQF Level 4

Course Overview

This concise outcomes-based two-day entry level course gives learners a clear understanding of the PM process, tools and techniques and the benefits of implementing PM. It is ideal for new entrants into project management, or project personnel who have never had any formal training in project management, or managers who interface with projects and need to understand the terminology and processes.

Specific outcomes are assessed during the course to measure the learning that has taken place.

Course Objectives

Project Management Demystified has been designed to give learners a clear understanding of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide). The course aims to deliver a well-balanced blend of theory and practice through teamwork and as such, learners will:

  • Be able to decide the applicability of the project management process to their own business environment and work endeavours
  • Understand and be immediately equipped to put into practice the essential tools and techniques learned on the course
  • Have a sound grounding for progression to higher level project-management career path development.

Course Content

The course highlights:

  • Multi-media CD-ROM approach to defining and managing projects step-by-step
  • The history of project management including the Project Hall of Fame - successes and disasters
  • The anatomy of a successful project manager
  • The essentials of Cost, Quality, Communication and Integration Management
  • Write a scope statement, identify project process groups, construct a dependency diagram, do network and cash flow analysis
  • Project context, processes, life cycles and methodologies
  • Project planning exercises: the Redecorating Project and the Kruger Millions Project
  • Team tasks: Develop a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and do a Risk Analysis
  • A guided tour through the last PM software including Microsoft Project, Critical Path Analysis, Precedence Networking
  • Video case studies in planning and execution: The Three Tenors Concert, the London Arena Project; QE II Refurbishment Project
  • Overview of Contract Law and Procurement
  • Project close-out, lessons learned, continuous improvement.

Each learner will receive a copy of a Project Management Guideline, a course manual, free one-year subscription to ProjectPro e-News, e-Library and a certificate of achievement (lunch and refreshments included).

Who should attend?

New entrants to the work or project management environments will benefit from this course, as will project management personnel who have never had any project management formal training, as well as delegates from other professions who have identified a need to apply project management methods to their work or environment.
